Well I know this is old, but it’s the first I am seeing of it on YouTube and am able to post on the site. This goal from a skills competition was done by a 9-year old at a Bruins game.

How long until Ovie tries this at an All-Star skills competition?

Viral video may be one of the most over-used and over-hyped buzz words when it comes to social media marketing. Granted, there are some formulas that can help you plot out the key components of a “viral” video, its viral nature depends on actual people viewing it. YouTube may make it easier with their sponsored videos to almost force the issue, people, not money are what turns the cogs.

Perhaps the best viral videos in this respect have come when companies didn’t want any thing to do with them – Think Coke with the Mentos video. A similar violent eruption was evident in Sony’s new campaign promoting their TV in Australia.

By not hiding the fact that they are behind the video, Sony gains some initial street cred by hawking two of their products that compliment each other, while not in the intended method of using it.  The campaign also plugs the fact that Sony will be giving away 25,000 PS3’s to folks who purchase the TV – brilliant mixed marketing. Just think how good the TV looked getting destroyed, wouldn’t it look better playing the latest version of Madden?

What do you think, could this thunder from down under be the month’s big viral hit?

Stranger danger

I know that PSAs are meant to keep kids safe, but this one – out of the 70’s or 80’s – is sure to give you nightmares.

Gives a whole new meaning to stranger danger.

I have never been a real fan of Jimmy Fallon. Granted his Nomah SNL skits were hysterical, but as a comic, he really wasn’t relevant.

That seems to have all changed with his new spot on the late night circuit. However he has found a way to make himself relevant. Last week, I heard all about the incident where Fallon invited Steve Garfield on the show after a debate on what a video blog was. This shows relevance, however his recent video featured on Mashable today hits that while also poking fun at Billy ray Cyrus. It’s especially comical given Cyrus’ insistence on staying in the spotlight from his daughter’s fame. Enjoy.

For the past two days, I was sequestered with about 400-500 social media, PR, marketing and sales folks at the 2009 Inbound Marketing Summit. There were a lot of great folks at the show. Perhaps the most interesting thing was that there were no real presentations that focused on the ME, ME, ME, but was rather filled with trust agents, brand shepherds, vendors and overall gurus – some self-appointed, but lets not go there. I made some great acquaintances and met folks in REAL LIFE with the main takeaway being that 1. PR is Changing, 2. Companies need to incorporate social media into their sites to increase their customer confidence 3. It is all about trust – when we lose that, we lose our customer and the share of the conversation.

Below are some of my favorite presentations of the summit.

Is there ever an original thought anymore? It’s tough to find in the world of music with all of the samples and it doesn’t

seem like there’s a flick that hits the theaters that wasn’t made 30-some-odd years ago or was on the smaller screen on Saturday mornings (here and here). Even the world of literature which screams originality, tends to borrow from stories past. As does our government, one would only need to look at Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to hear the words of Change 1.0.

I found myself wondering the same thing about the business marketing industry as my boss and I pondered ideas for a contest after reading the story about Netflix awarding a cold million to the winners of their three-year old contest to improve their movie prediction tool. The contest seemed original to us for all of an hour or so when Mashable posted this nugget about PayPal.  It was kind of disheartening throwing contest ideas off one another only to say Didn’t so-and-so do that contest, heck even the contest that we are currently running, has been done before.

It almost felt like we were stuck in that episode of South Park where the shows creators mocked their own originality in an episode called Simpsons Did It.  Every creative thought was met with a sarcastic Simpsons did it, in an homage of sorts for the classic Fox series.

With the overall lack of original ideas out there, I wonder if it is the idea that matters or if it is in the delivery.  I am a firm believer in the proof being in the pudding, so the success hinges on how well the campaign is executed that ultimately will determine a company’s success. Afterall with human life being thousands of years old, there is a good chance that whatever you are thinking, it has been done before. If not, by a person, I am sure that the Simpsons did it first.
